The comic operas of Cimarosa are, in the matter of originality of idea and fresh melody, equal to anything produced by his contemporaries. The only one out of all the works given in the foregoing list which has preserved any degree of vitality is Il Matrimonio Segreto, which is still occasionally produced, and has been printed in England. Cimarosa was the rival of Paisiello, and authorities are divided over their respective merits.
