ERARD, Sebastien

(1752–1831)> PIANOFORTE-MAKER

ERARD (Sebastien). French pianoforte-maker, Strassburg, April, 1752. Commenced to construct pianos, 1777. Took out various patents for improvements from 1809. Paris, Oct. 1831. This firm, located in Paris, is one of the most important of its kind, and was carried on after Sebastien’s death by the nephew Pierre. Their pianos, while of great good quality, hold an inferior position in popular estimation to their grand harps, which are, beyond all question, the finest instruments made.
