BAUSCH, Pina

Born in Germany, Bausch trained at the (Kurt Jooss [1901–1979]) Folkwang School in Essen before studying at the Juilliard School of Dance in New York, where she worked with, among others, the Expressionists ballet choreographer Anthony Tudor (1908–1987). Becoming director of the city-subsidized Wuppertal Dance Theater company in 1973, Bausch evolved a Tanz Theater (dance theater) that is a rich and complex amalgam of movement, text, music, and stunning visual effects.
