GIBSON, Jon (11 March 1940). As an experienced improviser before becoming a lifelong flutist in the Philip Glass Ensemble, he also performed at various times with La Monte Young , Terry Riley, and Steve Reich —the entire pantheon of pioneering Minimal and Modular composers. His own music typically mixes repeated elements with free improvisation, at times with environmental sounds, in extended linear strucutures, often in performances for his wife, the choreographer Nancy Topf (1942–98).
