May, Joseph “Brother Joe” (November 9, 1912, Macon, MS; May 14, 1972, Thomasville, GA) Brother Joe May was born on a small farm in Macon, Mississippi. May was raised by his mother, Aslean May, who was very active in the Church of God. May began singing at age nine. He later joined the senior choir at the Church out on the Hills and the Church of God Quartet. May graduated high school and then began working as a laborer in Macon.
