Pseudonyms Recording artists have frequently used more than one stage name (nom du disque) in their studio work. One reason was to avoid contractual difficulties when they wished to work with one label while signed up as an exclusive to another. A second reason was that record companies wanted to simulate a long list of artists when they did not have such; if they gave each person three names it quickly tripled the list without extra cost.
