Soul Music Recordings

Soul Music Recordings A term first coined in the 1960s, generally used for the more hard-edged Black performers of the era. The style is based on impassioned expression, and such vocal devices as falsetto, sobs, and shouts. The labels that carried much of the early soul were Atlantic (Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin) and Stax (Otis Redding, Sam and Dave). The term fell into disuse during the disco era.
