Standard Quartette

Standard Quartette A male vocal group that recorded for Columbia cylinders. They were announced on the records as “gentlemen of color”—“which, if true, would seem to make them the first Black group ever to record.” Among their presentations in the 1894–1896 period were “Swing Low,” “Nationality Medley,” and old-fashioned jubilee songs. [Brooks 1979.]
