alliteration (ENG N) Sound pattern in which an initial consonant (or consonants) is repeated noticeably (in a line or stanza of poetry, called initial or head rhyme). Can also include vowels and consonant / vowel combinations. French Romantic and Symbolist poets (Baudelaire, Mallarmé) introduce a high degree of alliteration to their poetry to heighten its musicality.
