boulevard
le boulevard (FR N-M) wide urban street, generally planted along the sides with trees. The Parisian boulevard traditionally has three distinct strips: sidewalks for shoppers, roadways for traffic, and a strip of trees that separate the two functions. First appears in French in the 18th / 19th centuries with the modern meaning, (15th c.) bulwark or rampart, from middle Netherlandish bolwerc. (Apollinaire)
