écriteau

l'écriteau (FR N-M) placard, paper, cardboard, or otherwise inscribable surface printed with large letters designed to bring the public's attention to something. It is not the same as a poster, but is usually smaller and without graphics; often worn by or propped in front of beggars. First appears in French in the 14th century, from Latin scribere. (Jacob)
