fauve (FR ADJ) yellow, or yellow-orange tending toward red; of wild beasts, their scent or ferocity. »Les Fauves« was a name given to a varied group of 20th century artists who believed in using color not realistically, but rather to play off other color values, creating an emotional »temperature« in otherwise potentially ordinary landscapes and the like: »la couleur vecue« (»lived« color), using a minimum of mixed colors.
