nénuphar
le nénuphar (FR N-M) aquatic plant (Nympheacea) known as the water-lily or lotus, with large flat leaves and showy blossoms that spread over ponds. Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) immortalized the water-lily by constructing his own water garden at his home in Giverny and then repeatedly painting the scenes he saw in canvases of luminous, often mysterious, serenity. First appears in French in the 13th century, from Arabic ninufar. (Brimont)
