pourpoint
le pourpoint (FR N-M) doublet, first appears in the 13th century, an article of men's clothing that covers the torso to just below the waistline. Over the years, the length and shape of the doublet changed, with the addition of quilting or padding, reinforced with metal studs or discs, to emphasize the upper arms, and a flared bottom to exaggerate the waistline. First appears in French in the 13th century, from OF pourpoindre (pour [for] + poindre [to stab]). (Bourget, Fombeure, Hyspa)
