Andersén studied economics in Helsinki before enrolling at the Sibelius Academy. He received his diploma in church music in 1942 and made several trips abroad for study. He became a lecturer at the Sibelius Academy in 1956 and was appointed head of the church music department there in 1958. From 1956 he served the Thomas Church as a cantor-organist.
