Höylä studied with Yrjö Selin at the Sibelius Academy and in Paris with André Navarra. He began his career as a cellist with the Helsinki Philharmonic from 1958 to 1960, was a cellist with the Lahti orchestra in 1961 to 1963, principal cellist with the Finnish National Opera orchestra from 1963 to 1975, and since then principal cellist with the Helsinki Philharmonic.
