Sakari began studying the violin at the age of seven and later studied piano and oboe as well. At fifteen he was concertmaster in the Tampere conservatory orchestra. Entering the Sibelius Academy as a conducting major, he studied with Jorma Panula, receiving a conducting diploma in 1981 and later a violin diploma.
