Tarasti studied music at the Sibelius Academy from 1967 to 1975 and music history and aesthetics at the University of Helsinki. He completed his doctoral studies in 1978 with a dissertation entitled Myth and Music: A Semiotic Approach to the Aesthetics of Myth in Music, Especially That of Wagner, Sibelius, and Stravinsky.
