(Fr.: lyre sur coque; Ger.: Schalenleier), lyre having a natural or hollowed-out bowl for a resonator and a membrane belly: the lyra of ancient Greece and of modern Africa. Some African bowl lyres are still made of a tortoise carapace, as were those of ancient Greece. Its home in modern times is Ethiopia, and it has hardly advanced beyond the sphere of influence of that country (100, 195).
