Box lyre
Box lyre (Fr.: lyre sur caisse; Ger.: Kastenleier), lyre having a built-up wooden box for resonator and wooden soundboard, such as the *kithara of ancient Greece. In modern times it has not survived outside Ethiopia. Those of ancient Ur, Sumer, Babylon, and Egypt, as well as those of Ethiopia today, tend to an asymmetrical design with arms of unequal length set at different angles (100, 195).
