Cai dan bao

Cai dan bao (dan, lute; bao, gourd), primitive one-stringed harp of Vietnam, an evolution of the ground bow. A flexible rod is placed upright on a rectangular resonator; a wire string is attached to the top of the rod and its other end tied to the resonator. The string is plucked with a plectrum, and its pitch regulated by flexing the rod. Played by women and blind persons (170). Sachs, Curt. The History of Musical Instruments. New York, 1940.
