Cymbalum
Cymbalum pl. cymbala (med. Lat.) [Gk. *kymbalon], early med. word for a small, bowl-shaped bell, as opposed to the larger campana, used from the 9th c. on. In pl. form the word denotes a *bell chime. Paulus Paulirinus, writing ca. 1460, still refers to it as a nola parva (small bell). Cf. bell chime, cymbala, horologium, Zimbelstern.
