Dāmaru
Dāmaru (Beng., Sans., Hindi), drum of India, similar to the udukkai but in addition it has a cord wound around its waist, with knotted ends that strike against the heads when the drum is shaken. The dāmaru is sacred, being an attribute of Siva, but now it is in the hands of mendicants all over India. Cf. budubuduke, damru, dauru, davandai (68, 179).
