Döwel
Döwel (to sound), musical stone of Ethiopia, used as a substitute for church bells, suspended from a tree or frame outside the church door and struck like a gong. Frequently it occurs as a chime of 2, 3, or 4 stones. A small dowel is known as katchel (45). Courlander, Harold. “Notes from an Abyssinian Diary,” in Musical Quarterly, Vol. 30. New York, July 1944.
