Fipple flute
Fipple flute (Fr.: flute à bloc; Ger.: Blockflöte), flute sounded by a fipple and a flue (also called duct or windway). A hole is cut in the wall of the flute below the fipple, its sharp edge being known as the lip. The player's breath is directed by the flue against the lip. Flageolets and recorders are examples of fipple flutes. The Ger. word Blockflöte has come to denote specifically the recorder. Also called whistle flute.
