Gigue

Gigue (OFr.) [MHGer. *gîge], bowed instr. of med. France, mentioned from the mid-12th c. to the late 14th. In the 12th c. it is mentioned together with the viele, but never with the rebec, and is assumed to have been identical with the latter. Sachs was first to suggest this identification (53, 82, 169).
