Hintersatz

Hintersatz (Ger.), in med. organs those pipes which stood behind the front pipes (Vordersatz or préstant). During the Renaissance this developed into a mixture—the Grossmixtur of Schlick's age—of pipes at higher pitches than those of the front pipes. As Grossmixtur, the pipes were wide-scaled principals, nonrepeating, composed of octs. and quints, later also with tierces.
