Kortholt

Kortholt (short wood), obs. woodwind instr. depicted by Praetorius. His drawing shows a straight gedackt instr. with cylindrical 2-channel bore, played with a double reed, differing apparently from the bass sordun only by being played with a reed cap. (The compass of the bass sordun is given as Bb1-bb0.) It was identical with the Kort Instrument, or Kurzpfeife, but not with the curtal (which had a conical bore), and similar to, but not identical with, the courtaut (114, 159). Sort…
