Monaulos
Monaulos (Gk.), late type of aulos played in Ptolemaic Egypt, a single pipe fingered with both hands and provided with fingerholes similar to those of double pipes, i.e., twice 4 fingerholes and 2 rear thumbholes. Surviving specimens have 2 groups of 4 fingerholes separated by 1 thumbhole, the other being below the top fingerhole (14). Baines, Anthony. Woodwind Instruments and Their History. London, 1957.
