Poliphant

Poliphant string instr. resembling the modern *harp lute, invented ca. 1600 by Daniel Farrant, with 25–40 strings. An illustration of it appears in ms. Harl. 2034 of the British Museum. Apart from this and Playford's comment that it was not unlike a lute, little is known of it except that it was also called polyphon (79). Galpin, Francis W. Old English Instruments of Music. London, 1932.
