Quartfagott
Quartfagott (It.: fagotto quarto), in Praetorius' day a bassoon pitched in G1 a 4th below the ordinary bassoon (for pieces written in “canto duro,” as he says). In the 18th and 19th c. the term also denoted a bassoon pitched in F0, a 4th above the ordinary bassoon. Cf. Quintfagott, tenoroon.
