Rondro

Rondro percussion instr. of the Tanala of the Malagasy Republic. A wooden bar is placed in a rice mortar, the cavity of which serves as resonator. The bar is struck with sticks. Now a child's toy, the rondro was originally played by adults to welcome chiefs and to serve at other functions. See also: kakanika-kanika (171). Sachs, Curt.
