Rubeba

Rubeba (Lat.) [Arab. *rabāb], med. European word for the rebec, in use from the 13th to the 16th c. Jerome of Moravia describes it in the 13th c. as having 2 strings tuned a 5th apart; it is mentioned in Fr. literature in the same c., in Engl. literature in the 14th c. By the 16th c. the term was misapplied to other stringed instrs. and no longer designated the rebec. Cf. rebebe, rubebe (Note: rebube is the Jew'sharp) (53, 89).
