Tabor

Tabor [OFr. *tabur], small drum, round and shallow, often provided with a snare, in use from the 12th c. on; the ancestor of our snare drum. In Engl. literature of the 14th c. it is commonly spelled tabour. Played together with a pipe (see: pipe and tabor), it is most often depicted suspended from the player's left arm, with the drumstick held in his right. During its long career it has assumed many sizes and even shapes, generally being rather shallow in relation to its diam.
