Violon-alto
Violon-alto (Fr.), viola designed by Michel Woldemar of Orléans ca. 1788, with a violin e2 string in addition to the ordinary viola strings. It represents one of several similar attempts in the 18th c. to make the viola more competitive. Woldemar was a violinist, not a builder, and it is thought that François Lupot of Orléans built it.
