Wagon classical *board zither of Japan, a koto said to be indigenous and to have developed from 6 hunter's bows laid side by side. Such bows, placed strings uppermost, once played a role in persuading the sun goddess to issue from the cave she had hidden in. Today one end of the wagon's board still has 5 notches cut in it, the 6 silk strings being attached to the 6 projecting “bows” thus created. But the oldest extant specimens point to Korean influence.
