Zampoña Sp. term used to designate a number of instrs.: 1. in certain areas of Spain it is syn. of gaita, a bagpipe; 2. also syn. of caramillo and of pipiritaño; 3. from the 14th c. on it has designated the panpipes; 4. on the Balearic Islands it specifically denotes a mouth-blown bagpipe with sheepskin bag, chanter, and bass drone, also 2 small dummy drones; 5. among the Huave Indians of Mexico it is a *musical bow struck with a small stick (13, 57, 105).
