Cariselli was offered as a comic entertainment based upon an alleged episode in the life of an Italian composer by the same name who considered his musical attainments so impressive that he came to France to replace Lully. The latter composer is supposed to have heard of this plan and to have rehearsed three vocalists to sing Bondi Cariselli as soon as his rival appeared at Court.
