La Maschera ou les nuits de Venise was a pantomimic ballet suggested by one of the colorful legends that grew up around the beautiful gypsy dancer Zanara. Its music was composed by Paolo Giorza, and its libretto was written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. It was in three acts and six tableaux, and it had its world premiere at the Imperial Theatre of the Opéra in Paris on 22 February 1864 with choreography by Rota.
