Meilhac, Henri (23 February 1831, Paris; 6 July 1897, Paris), librettist, went to work in a bookstore after the completion of his studies and filled his spare time drawing caricatures and writing articles for the humorous publication Le Journal pour rire . He turned next to the theatre and employed his ready wit in the composition of three pieces for the Vaudeville theatre in 1855 and 1856.
