Dumb organist

Dumb organist obs. 19th-c. device set on the manual of an organ for depressing the keys mechanically. The boxlike container housed a pinned barrel actuated by a hand crank. It operated on the same principle as the *barrel organ, but was of course devoid of pipework and blowing mechanism. The appropriate keys were depressed by a series of levers. Cf. pianista.
