Englische Mechanik

Englische Mechanik (Ger.: English action), piano action not identical with the *English action but, in its earlier form, to the *Stossmechanik. In this type of action the hammer is hinged to a block behind the keys and points toward the player. The earlier form has no escapement. With added single escapement the action is known in Ger.-speaking countries as Englische Mechanik. The earliest *square piano (1742) has this form of action (92). Harding, Rosamund E. M.
