Les Amazones

Les Amazones is an opera in three acts with a score by Méhul and words by Jouy. It was given at the Imperial Academy of Music on 17, 20, 24, and 27 December 1811, on 10 and 14 January, and on 4 and 21 February before being dropped from repertory after its ninth and last performance on 31 March 1812. Its failure was complete, and a story circulated to the effect that Méhul was so unhappy over the fate of his work that he asked the Opéra to return it to him so that he might destroy it. Although…
