L’Embarras des richesses was billed as a comedy in three acts with a score by Grétry and words by Lourdet de Santerre. Its authors had hoped to profit by dealing with a subject that would provide some relief from the classical subjects that continued to furnish the inspiration for so many operatic compositions during the reign of Louis XVI, but their project was not very successful.
